Analysis Shows Artificial Compounds in Our Food System Causing a Health Toll of $2.2tn Annually

Scientists have sounded an urgent alarm, stating that several synthetic chemicals integral to modern farming are fueling higher rates of cancer, neurodevelopmental disorders, and infertility, while simultaneously undermining the very foundations of global agriculture.

The annual financial toll from contact with compounds like phthalates, bisphenols, agrochemicals, and Pfas is estimated at as much as $2.2 trillion—a staggering sum on par with the combined profits of the planet's top one hundred publicly traded corporations, according to a new report.

Moreover, most environmental degradation is still unpriced. However even a conservative assessment of ecological impacts—factoring in farm losses and the cost of meeting drinking water standards for these chemicals—suggests an extra cost of $640 billion. The report also warns of significant population ramifications, finding that if current exposure levels to endocrine disruptors remain, there could be between 200 million and 700 million less children born globally between 2025 and 2100.

A Sobering "Wake-up Call" from Health Experts

A key author on the study, a prominent pediatrician and academic of global public health, described the results a "necessary wake-up call".

"Humanity truly has to wake up and address chemical pollution," he said. "It is my contention that the challenge of chemical pollution is just as serious as the issue of climate change."

The expert noted a concerning shift in childhood health issues over his long career. Whereas diseases from infections have declined, there has been an "astonishing increase" in non-communicable diseases, with growing exposure to hundreds of synthetic chemicals being a "major cause."

The Ubiquitous Substances in Our Food

The report specifically focuses on the effects of four groups of synthetic chemicals endemic in worldwide agriculture:

  • Phthalates and Bisphenols: Frequently used as plastic additives, they are found in containers and single-use gloves used in cooking.
  • Pesticides: These enable industrial agriculture, with huge single-crop farms spraying enormous quantities on crops to kill weeds, and many produce being treated post-harvest to maintain shelf life.
  • "Forever chemicals": Used in greaseproof paper, popcorn tubs, and cartons, these persistent chemicals have accumulated in the environment to the point of contaminating the food chain through pollution.

All of these substances have been associated with grave harms, including hormonal disruption, various cancers, congenital abnormalities, cognitive disability, and obesity.

A Largely Unchecked Problem with Unknown Risks

Public and ecological contact to manufactured chemicals has exploded since the mid-20th century, with worldwide chemical production growing more than 200-fold. Today, there are more than 350,000 different chemicals on the international market.

Critically, unlike drugs, there are minimal testing requirements to test for the long-term effects of commercial chemicals before they are released onto common use, and little tracking of their impacts once deployed. Some have subsequently been discovered to be highly toxic to people, wildlife, and ecosystems.

The lead expert expressed particular concern about chemicals that harm children's brains and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The researcher stressed that the chemicals studied in the report are "merely the tip of the iceberg," representing a tiny fraction of substances for which robust safety data exists.

"What terrifies me profoundly is the many thousands of chemicals to which we're all subjected every day about which we know virtually nothing," he confessed. "Until one of them causes something blatantly obvious, like children to be born with missing limbs, we're going to go on unthinkingly subjecting ourselves."

This analysis finally presents a grim picture of a hidden crisis within the global food system, calling for immediate measures and reform to mitigate this colossal health and environmental challenge.
