Explosion Claims 3 Police Officers Amid Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who ran away after the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to medical facility.
The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area revealed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.
Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.
A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
Community Reaction
“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
