Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The economist declared he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel released his regular messages with the financier

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.

He commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their development".

Summers, who formerly led Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Message Exchange

The newly public communications demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization said it respected the economist's choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company commented.

Political Context

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its files on the case.

The measure will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has said he intends to sign the bill, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often trying to link Summers to prominent world leaders.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were released with the public, he said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to restore confidence and mend bonds with the persons closest to me".

Professional History

The professor served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in DC where he was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was no longer associated with the institution.

He joined the directorate of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
