Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Leader Steps Down After Move Towards Chicken.

The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while broadening the chain into fried chicken has been ousted after disagreements with its governing body.

Leadership Shake-Up

Andrew Rennie is leaving after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's seeks a permanent CEO.

Rennie, who served at Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to shift the UK's largest pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, remarking earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the most rapidly expanding protein in the world.

Board Disagreements

Sources suggest that there was disagreement between Rennie and the directors over his approach and business vision, although the company's announcement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.

New Brand Launch

In September, the chain launched its chicken-focused offering – which Rennie referred to as a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is piloting it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the business is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in the coming year as intended, it regards chicken products as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Board Statement

Ian Bull, the company chair, said: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are prioritizing identifying the ideal CEO to direct the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”

Market Difficulties

In the latest update, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said sales dipped by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In the summer, it warned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the budget and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a significant fall in half-year profits.

Rival chains are also struggling. Pizza Hut revealed the closing of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its UK venues entered insolvency.

Wellness Efforts

Adapting to customer preferences towards balanced diets, the company has introduced light items, such as its Thin & Crispy line of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as plant-based and gluten-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.

Interim Leadership

The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to take on the CEO position on a full-time basis.

Frampton stated: “We have a multiple current expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at pace.”

She added these comprised ongoing development on the company's procurement system and product development, and its customer retention initiative.

Domino's is also without a long-term CFO until March 16, when a new appointee comes aboard from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Richard Snow is interim finance chief.
